Anthem: Chapter 1

Respond 2 of the 5 questions (listed below). Use no less than 3 sentences in your responses. (Honors' students must use a 1x5 response.) Be thoughtful and use specific details and examples.

1- To help create setting, Ayn Rand uses color imagery. Find two examples in the chapter. What colors does the author use? What image is she trying to convey?

2- The first page of Anthem begins, “It is a sin to write this.” Using textual evidence, explain why Equality is committing a sin when he writes.

3- Why does Equality refer to himself as “we”?

4- Would you want to be friends with someone like Equality? Why or why not?

5- Ayn Rand wanted Equality 7-2521 to stand out from his brothers. Explain how she accomplished this by contrasting Equality 7-2521’s physical attributes to those of his fellow men.

Honors' Discussion Prompt: Honors' students most post their response to this question the form of a 1x5 and reply to 2 other students' posts.

Describe the society in which Anthem is set. Some areas to consider are the political structure, degree of technology, social relationships, quality of life, and education. Would you want to live in this society? Explain why or why not.

  1. The lives they lived are cut of and uneducated. Yes they are in school but are limited to what there is to learn. There are many rules, most of which i could never follow. They are not aloud to speak for themsevles and it is forbidden to be smarter then other students around you. The society is full of mindless zombies that are not aloud to use free will. I am a person who as to express my throughts and feelings, not being allowed to sing would drive me insaine. therefor living in that society is out of the question for me!

  2. I believe that Equality refers to himself as "we" because he was never taught that he was an individual. In his school it is taught that all men think alike and that it is a so called "sin" if you think differently. There is no one person with Equality it him and all of his other brothers. Even though he is just one person he thinks and acts like everyone else being no different. Equality is just trying to make sure he does not break any laws and you can’t act the same as everyone else if you think like your own person. He's trying to convince himself that he is one with his brothers.

Ayn makes Equality stand out by giving him specific traits that nobody else seems to have in the society. Equality is overly smart and picks up things very quickly. He wants to learn and discover unknown things and to find answers to hard questions. Equality does not really like the rules and chooses not to follow them. He is adventurous and spontaneous, making him perfect for acting out in the future and making a stand.

  3. #4: From where I stand now I would want to be friends with Equality. I think though if i was with Equality in his time that I would be of a different thought. I am not exactly a follower but why change what's going on. In his time i would not be his friend because he would be trying to change what i had believed in all the time. Also he would be breaking laws and associating with a criminal could get me in trouble.

#5: Equality stands out for many reasons. For one he is taller than his brothers. Also he questions and wants to learn more than anybody else. He calls this a "curse". He was smarter than his brothers. He is also not afraid to learn and break the laws, so he is also brave.

    ReplyDelete
  4. #3: The reason Equality uses "we" is because they were taught to be as one. I mean all the "brothers". They are all different, but they are not taught to be unique in their own way. They are taught to be as one. As brothers, forever and if you were to forget that than your punishment could be cruel. It is a "sin" to think diffferently. I don't find that as being a real society, but of course they were never taught different so they think it's normal to act the same. He thinks as his own person, but he keeps saying we because he wants to remind himself that all brothers are one.

#4: I would defintely want to be friends with Equality. It would be boring if all my friends acted the same. That's why I have different friends who share a piece of my personality with their's. Equality knows he isn't supposed to think differntly than any of his brothers, but he does. He doesn't have the same mind as them. I think it's cool that he has his own feelings, and thoughts; even though he isn't allowed to say them. He wants to tell people, but he knows better, so I would be friends with him and hopefully get him to open up. He's different and I like that.

  5. Prompt: The society the Anthem is set in is almost animatronic. Everybody has the same routine from the time they were born until the time they perish. Yes, they have different jobs, but their work ethics are the same. The society is very strict, gloomy, and boring. Brothers can talk to one another, but they aren't supposed to even look at sisters or let alone talk to them. It is considered weird to be smarter than your brothers. They are like puppets and the council of scholar is their puppet masters. I personally couldn't take the mind boggling rules they would have set for me. I like to do things my own way. I don't need a crazy society like that to tell me how to live my everyday life. It would drive me insane. I would be the one running to the Uncharted Forest. I couldn't live like that!

    ReplyDelete
  6. 4/ I would love to be friends with the rebels that are Equality. They are free thinking and a good kind of defiant. They have no say in their lives. Since they were born they have been told what to do, sent to some degrading places, and got the humiliating job of street sweepers. Yet they can always keep there interset in things even though it is a "sin" to be more anything than fellow man.

5/ Ayn makes Equality stand out from everyone else tremendously. He is just as smart as cunning and an overachiever. Yet this is somehow frowned upon in the anthem society? He is daring and adventorous yet all these atributes are curses as well. Ayn was trying to show that they were "superhuman" yet followed the rules even though they didnt want too.

  7. Anthem is a dreary, emotionless city. It is very structured but extremely strict. Anthem seems to be poor and simple because of the basic jobs available: carpenter, street sweeper, leader, actor, and the "honor" of scholar. I would hate to live in a town like Anthem because everyone is a robot except for the corrupt elders. But on the otherhand, you would not know that because you were basically brainwashed as you grew up. The education was predetermined for everyone in their crazy pesimist downer school. The lack of free will would be enough to drive anyone crazy. Anthem is not the city for me.

  8. #3:The reason equality refers to himself as we is because he is taught that all man are one. Equality is taught that they are one in all and all in one. They are taught that there is no man only the great WE. This is carved into a slab of marble in the Palace of the World Council so he believes this is true. He says it has been true since the Great Rebirth. Equality wants to be different and he shows that he is different and a rebel by stealing things from the house of the scholars and the street sweepers and goes to a underground train way and conducts experiments of his own that the house of scholars does not teach.

#4:If I lived in the kind of controlled world that is the setting in this book I would love to have been friends with equality. He would make this bleak world that they lived in seem more interesting. We could do whatever we would want in the train way and we could learn things that no one form the house of scholars would have any idea about. I would also like to become friends with him because he didn't care what other people thought about him and he would do whatever he felt like.

    ReplyDelete
  9. The anthem is set in a very bleak place and it seems very boring. I would not want to live in the anthem's setting mostly because I would not be able to choose my own career. Another reason I would not like to live in this society is I wouldn't like the technology that they are using it seems old and it would make things harder to do. I would probably try to explore because I like to have fun and it sounds like you wouldn't if you lived in this place. I wouldn't like that you can't talk to certain people either because I like to talk to other people.

    ReplyDelete
  10. #3: Equality refers to himself as 'we' because that’s what he was taught to do. In his society people are taught that they are all 'one'. No man is unique, they are all the same. To do or be different from you brothers is to sin and all sin is punishable. Those who are born different are looked upon as cursed.

#5: Equality is very different from his 'brothers'. Unlike his 'brothers', Equality is tall and that’s not the norm form the people of his time. Equality is very smart and curious. He likes to learn new things and ask questions. Everything that makes Equality who he is, is thought to be a curse by everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Honors Prompt: Equality's time is actually in the future but people live almost like they are from the past. They don't have electricity and use candles. No one is allowed to talk about the time before the 'Great Rebirth'. They're education is limited to what the people in power want them to know. To question authority is to bring a harsh punishment upon yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  12. #2 In the beginning, Equality states that it is a sin to write his story. It is a sin because it breaks all the obvious taboos of his cultures. This could been viewed as a type of rebellion. In his culture, everything is chosen for him and he has no choice. When he writes this story, it is like he is his own person, and that is clearly against the laws. This would be a very dangerous act.

#3 Equality refers to himself as "We" for several reasons. In his culture, everyone has been stripped of their individuality. He must do this to be considered equal to everyone else. It is against the law to be different with them. "We" includes everyone, not just an individual.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Honors Prompt: The book is set in a controlled society. The only politics are the Councils. They are the definate and final decision. They make all the decisions for everyone. The people are expected to be exactly alike in all senses, and stripped of their individuality. Their lives are dull and pointless. I would not like to live there because free will is unheard of.

    ReplyDelete
  14. #3 Equality refers to himself as we because they, all the brothers, are taught to be the same. They believe acting differently and unique is a “sin.” As brothers they are a whole, not each being their own individual person. They are taught that there is no man just a “we.” However, Equality knows he is his own person, but he stills talks in third person because he does not want to be punished.
#4 Yes, I would like to be friends with Equality. He is unique and knows this. I like my friends to all be their own person with their own personality, feelings, and beliefs. His trait of uniqueness is something I value in a friend. Equality wants everyone to know he is different, but realizes the consequences of this risky move.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The Anthem is set in a dull and strict atmosphere. The citizens are expected to follow many rules and are forbidden to be individuals. In this society, free will is not heard of and makes people’s lives very routine and pointless. I feel not being able to make your own decisions would be torturous and I for one would be very unhappy living there. However, you wouldn’t realize you were living in such a society because you were born with the living conditions and was never taught anything differently. So therefore, to these people, they are living a completely normal life.

  16. Reply to pzopp: I like the way you describe the setting in the Anthem. Your answer was very simple, yet it described the setting perfectly.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Reply to L Wood: The way you described how they lived in the future, but yet in the past really explained how the setting was very unique. Keep up the good work.

    ReplyDelete
  18. The reason that the first page of the book begins, “It is a sin to write this.” is because, in the times mentioned in the book, it is a sin to stand apart from humanity. Individuality has been destroyed so that a man cannot stand alone, but he must rely on his brother. In the book it is stated that "...he came close to losing his life because his knowledge was regarded as a treacherous blasphemy...he had rediscovered the lost and holy word I." In my mind, this goes to show what happens when humans lose their since of who they are as individuals, and let others dictate what they think. This destroys the ability to reason, create, and prosper as individuals.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The anthem is set in a time in which the concept of a distinct individual has been destroyed. Humans are not allowed to love one of their brothers more than another which destroys the entire concept of friendship. They have invalidated everything that was discovered before their time, and have forgotten everything that once was. Everything that they have invented has come from the hall of the scholars, which limits what can be discovered. The greatest discoveries made so far have been glass and candels. I would hate to live in such a society because the intelect of the human being has been limited to the point no one can accomplish anything. Everything has to be done by man as a whole and focus on man as a whole, so therefore nothing of importance gets done.

    ReplyDelete
  20. The reason that Equality refers to himself as "we" is because he lives in a time where the word "I" has been forgotten. Personal preference is blasphemy. Everything must be done for, with, and by your fellow man. Use of the word "I" is an unpardinable sin that can result in death. Mankind is a group that is bound by shackels of the mind.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Equality refers to himself as 'we' because that is what he was taught. He was taught it was wrong to be an individual and that is how they brought up all the children. Since it is a sin to be an individual, they were taught to refer to themselves as 'we' to signify that they were thinking as one with their brothers and not on their own. Equality doesn't even realize it's odd to refer to himself as 'we' because he doesn't know any better. The word 'I' isn't even in their vocabulary.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @ thart:

I liked the way you described the setting of Anthem. You really captured the total bleakness, and absurdity of that world.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @ Bbick:

I think that your explination of why Equality refers to himself as 'we' was well thought out. It proves that sometimes we have to break away from what we are taught.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Equality is six feet tall. To him this is a burden because he is not the same as everyone else. People notice him because of this, and in that society, that is not a good thing. He stands out as different from the start and Ayn Rand did this so he would be completely different from his brothers and be noticed. He was even told there was evil in his bones because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Honor prompt:
The society in which Anthem was set is a desolate future in which humankind has lost all individuality and free will. The government consists only of a council of people who think they have the right to control they wills of all men. Whatever the council says is law, and to defy it is death. The technology in this future has been reduced to whatever the hall of scholars can reinvent, which is currently limited to glass and candles. It took a very long time for even candles to be accepted. Personal relationships are nonexistent because it is a sin to show preference for one brother over another. What passes for education in that society is very limited and biased. They tell them only what they want them to know. The quality of life is pretty bad it's like the medieval ages all over again. I would hate living in a society without free will or choices. I would not like being told what to do or forced to do things i didn't want to. The only good thing I wish we could have a little more of in our society is how everyone (except the council) was equal and everyone got along.

  26. This was late too. Sorry. My.. uh computer stopped working. (: Haha.

#1 Thoughout the irst chapeter of "Anthem", the author descirbes all the different places in similar ways. She uses the adjective "grey" and "white" very often. I imagine a very bleak, depressing setting that takes away all self expression. I think she was trying to show how everything was to look the same and everyone was to be seen as a whole, not as individuals. Personally, it reminds me of the episode of he Fairly Odd Parents where TRimmy wishes everone was a grey blob and looked the same. It was all boring, and very drab.

#3 Equality uses the pronouns "we", "they" and "us" during the chapter. It shows that no one is to think of themselves as a single person. No one is upposed to think for themselves; everything they do is for their "brothers". Everyone is to be seen a whole. No one has more opprotunity or less opprotuinity; everyone is painfully equal.

@kmael: I like how you described the setting. It made me laugh.

  29. 2- Because it has been shown in the book that an individual doing anything is wrong. That includes and highlights thoughts. Because he is thinking as an individual and is showing preference, it is a sin by the ruling society. Furthermore, writing is not his task and is not given the time to do so, that makes writing a sin. These rules are set to break down the individual.

    ReplyDelete
  30. 3). In the story, Equality refers to himself as "we". This really confused me at first, but once I got into the book it made alot more sense. I think that he does this because in this society you're not allowed to be unique or different. All the people there are one. It's like a bizzare cult type thing.

4). I would most definitely want to be friends with somebody like Equality. The way he is a sort of rebel in his community is kind of inspiring. He would be one of those friends you never got bored with because they always have something else to do...good or bad. I'm one of those people that doesn't like to play it safe all of the time and obviously neither does Equality. I admire him for his bravery in this story.

Prompt: The society in this story is kind of scary to me. The way that the people are lmited is strange and makes me wonder who would have thought of something like this. I can't imagine not being able to fall in love, show uniqueness, raise children, have a say in your life, or simply show happiness. Everything is such a structured routine. The whole concept just frightens me and I would most definitely not want to live there.

    ReplyDelete
  31. @mtayl: I like how you compared your answer to an episode of Fairly Odd Parents. Very creative!(:

@ekapl: I like how you answered number 4. Those were my thoughts exactly you just put it in better words than me!

  32. 3- It reflects the fact that the society is trying to rid people of identity. So, what would be a more subtle and effective way to do it than by getting rid of 1st-person pronouns? It creates the feeling that you can't achieve anything in self. This can be used as a creative form of propaganda. The fact also shows the government's power if it can change language.

  34. Prompt: The world in Anthem is incredibly dull, as it shows a land that all growth on the name of oneness. This fact is shown with the fact that this world is placed in the near future, where they lose all our technological innovations for no reasonable explanation. Furthermore, in such a society relationships are nonexistent and intercourse is viewed in a mechanical process. The quality of life then, as one might suspect, is comparable to drone bees in their individual meaningless. I could not live in such a unlogical society and also agree with the Equality.

scrou: You have great points about the education. But, I must ask, did you pay attention to the red lines?

ekapl: Wow, I did not think of that adjective. That is really good

    ReplyDelete
  35. #2 In Equality's world, no man should speak his own mind. For it is a sin to have your own opinion and to share it with others. The government wants complete control over everything. They need power. If everyone shares there own beliefs and opinions, then the people will have the power and the government doesn't want that.
#4 In my opinion, Equality would be a great friend to have. He has his own mind, and is not afraid to let others know it. He has a great deal of confidence which shows that he will not let others walk all over him.

    ReplyDelete
  36. #3 Equality refers to himself as "we" because he was brought up to say "we" like we say "I". Their Council doesn't want any one to express individuality. When he says "we", it basically means no man is above another. However, there is still superiority and inferiority in this society. In this society, saying "we" is a way to make everyone thing that they are equal.
#4 I think that I could go either way with Equality. On the downside, he is always complaining about stuff. He also is always breaking the laws. Although on the positive side, he really wants to learn. He also is inventive.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 3)- Equality refers to himself as 'we' and not 'I'. He refers to 'we' because that is what he was taught and 'I' has been forgotten. In the society he lives in, he is taught that it is a "sin" to be an individual. They use 'we' to show they were thinking as brothers and not as an individual. It seems almost as if in this society, you're banned from being unique and different. Everyone is to be looked at the same. Equality and his brothers together are one, they are all the same and banned from being different from one another. Although you aren't supposed to refer to yourself as a different individual, he still does but he uses 'we' to stay true to his brothers and say they are one.

4)- I think it would be pretty cool to have a friend like Equality. Equality is a really unique type of person and has a different personality. He knows he isn't supposed to talk about himself as an individual, but he does anyway and it's considered a sin to even think about it. He is the rebelious type and knows for a fact what should and shouldn't be done. He may come across dull and drab, but that's what makes him unique. Equality wants everyone to know he is different from his 'brothers' and from everyone else in the world.

Prompt: Anthem is set in a world of dullness. No one is allowed to be different, for it's a sin to even think about. It actually kind of scares me a bit just thinking about it. What if we lived in a world like that? I wouldn't want to live in a world where you can't express your feelings, show uniqueness, be different from the world, and not be able to control what goes on in your OWN life. The thought is quite frightening. I wouldn't mind trying to see what it's like when everyone is the same for a couple days. But what's the fun in that if you can't even have a show a little personality? It'd be quite the crazy, drab, little world if everyone was the same.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Prompt: The Anthem is set in a totalitarian society. This means that the government controls everything that the citizens do. For example, people are also not allowed to have personal relationships. Child birth is also controlled. This further supports the argument that there is still superiority and inferiority.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Jwats: I think though that you are right in a sense of superiority/inferiority.
You have the leaders, who control everything, but they all live in the same conditions. I think if there is a complex like that it's very small.

Jneal: I agree, it would be horrible to live in a world like that. Wouldn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. 3 I think that he referrers to himself as we because the way he was brought up made him always be concerned about his brothers.
    4. I would want to be friends with him because even though he has been brought up a certain way he still thinks like us.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Prompt- I wouldn't want to live in a society like that. Everyone has to be the same there and clearly that is virtually impossible. They have sucked all the color out of the world and made it lifeless. They made it a sin for someone to think of being different or unique. they somewhat are like us because the government some what controls what we go. Only the tiniest bit though.

  42. Mrana/I agree with your views on Equality and Anthem 110%. It would be truly terrible to live in a city like antem wouldn't it. Nice work:)

  43. 2) Equality is committing a sin by writing his feelings down. In his society, everyone needs to be equal (explaining his name.) Although you can't control someone's thoughts, he is expected to keep everything to himself. In this society opinions are a sin, Equality knows that he would get in trouble for expressing these opinions in his writing, but does it anyway.

    4) I would like to be friends with someone like Equality. He is somewhat rebellious for breaking the rules by expressing his thought. Although being friends with Equality could get you into trouble with the "top dogs," he is true to himself. It is good to be friends with someone who expresses their thoughts and feelings. If you're friends with someone who is true to themself, more than likely, you would be too.

  44. I would hate to live in a city like this. When I think of a place like the one in the book "Anthem," I think of zombies. Everyone is so lifeless and restricted from everything. The world seems so dual and boring.

    @katiewall2009:
I agree! I would hate to live in a place like that. I agree on the political comment as well.

#2- When Equality is saying he is sinning to write means he is sinning to speak his feelings and thoughts. In his society it is a sin to be different, to think alone, and to be one. Writing things that someone else might not understand is forbidden and unheard of. Although he it is a sin for writing, Equality feels he must in some way let his thoughts be somewhere else than only in his head. I think he is letting out pent up feelings he doesn't know he has by putting his story on paper.

#3- Equality speaks of himself as "we" because all man is the same and no one is to be alone in man's world. Everyone must be the equal, one is all and all is one would be a great quote to go along with this thought. Himself and his brothers are one and all, together, the same. Having to say "we" when he talks about "I" or himself brings into perspective the overall society of Equality's world. If everyone's the same then they are all easily munipulated.

    -Honors Prompt-
Everything is dull and the same in Anthem. The society is set up so the easy to munipulate are higher up than the ones who have the capablity to think for themselves. Everything is orderly and and no ones life is worth much. You can't have any realitionship with anyone for that is a sin, you can't think for yourself because that is a sin. It seems so dull and boring. They get fed well, but taught the same as everyone else until their put in a certain home. Even after that they know just as much as the other people in that home, so still everyone is the same, utterly, boringly, the same.

JFaul- I agree completely when you say that for someone to be true to themselves it would help you be true to yourself too. It's very true in more ways than one.

jwats- I can see how you'd go either way with EQuality. Its true he breaks the law, but don't you think we all would if you had the knowledge he did?

  48. 4. I would love to be friends with Equality 7-2521. He shows great leadership and does as he is told. When someone tells him to do something, he doesn't question, he does it. I like how when people boss him around he does as they say and is very humble about it. Lastly, when he receives his Life Mandate, he accepts it, even though it was not as he wanted. He becomes a street sweeper and does his job.

    5. Ayn Rand did an amazing job by contrasting the physical attributes between Equality 7-2521 and his brothers. During the time in the City Theatre, Equality 7-2521 uses his sneaky talents to get out in the darkness and to the hole. While all other street sweepers were still In the theatre, Equality 7-2521 is being a daredevil, sprinting through the streets. No other brother is given a special quality to find a metal rod. If you would notice, Equality 7-2521 is the only one who has ever found it, besides the ones of the Unmentionable Times.

  49. #1. One example of the color that I found was one page 18 when he talks about how the black water runs down the walls. “The walls are cracked and water runs upon them in thin threads without a sound, black and glistening like blood.” The other example I found was on page 28 when he is describing the white sleeping quarters. “The sleeping halls are white and clean and bare of all things save 100 beds.” I think the message she is trying to convey is that there is no pop of color to the city. The city and the people are very bland and there is nothing special about them. They all are the same and there isn’t one more important than the others.
#3. I think the reason that Equality refers to himself as “we” is because that’s the way he was taught. He doesn’t know any better. The people taught him taught him that everyone was the same. Also they thought him that you have to work together, and that no one is better than anyone else. He was taught that it is a shame to think that they are better than anyone else.

    Honors Discussion Prompt:
I personally would not want to live in the society that Equality lives in. The political structure is stupid. For each job there are head people and you follow there rules no matter what. Their technology stunk. They used a candle for light, and they didn’t know what electricity was! The relationship status’s of people was, well there weren’t relationships between men and women, but there was a friend relationship between men and women. The quality of life in the book wasn’t worth much. They didn’t care very much about the quality of life. Once you’ve done your part they pretty much toss you to the side. Also they didn’t have much of an education. You went to school for ten years, and then after that you were told what you were going to be.

  50. 2- Equality thinks it is a sin because he has always been taught to be no different than his brothers. He also is not supposed to be writing his thought down on paper. Equality stole the candle, too. He is also alone and that is forbidden. Equality is breaking many rules at this point.

3- Equality refers to him as we because of the community he was raised in. They were always taught that they were a group. Equality believes that they are a whole. Equality was taught to not think of himself as an individual. This is why he uses the first person plural noun, we.

Honors' Prompt: Anthem is set in a different situation than present times. They are controlled by a counsel. The population does not know anything but their job and the ten years of education they received. Their technology is limited, also. I would definitely not want to live in this communist like community.

  51. Scrou: I agree with you when you say that you couldn’t follow any of the rules, because I couldn’t follow the rules either. I also think that the part about the zombies is so true! They probably would be like zombies!

Ekapl: I think that it would stink to live that way! I would probably join you running in the forest. I agree I would feel like a puppet being controlled by a puppeteer.

  52. The setting of the Anthem is in a very unique and questionable time period. In my opinion, I would maybe like to live in this place. It is a very disciplined society, but sounds like the most boring place to be. Although, this isn't a bad thing. I like how each person cannot be stronger or smarter than someone of their equal rank. The degree of technology is very limited and what they have is not really helpful. Finally, leading back to technology, this affects the way you can teach, but since you were born, your life was the same as any person and you did as they say.

  54. #2 It is a sin for him to write these pages because it goes against everything the brotherhood has taught him. They want you to follow strict rules and not go around, or even think about it. He wanders off alone to do private work. On page 17 it states, "the laws say none among men may be alone, ever at any time, for this is the great transgression andthe root of all evil." He goes alone in private to write these pages and do works behind the councils backs, therfore making it a sin.
#4 I personally would love to be friends with Equality. He is a very bright and courageous young man. He defies orders which makes him even more desireable. He possess skills which make him greater than the rest he is among. He also has no far to speak what is on his mind.

I really liked your quote, "Mankind is a group that is bound by shackels of the mind."

It's interesting that you might live in this society. A unique choice.

scrou: I agree totally. It would drive me insane not to sing, and it would definitely be out of the questionn for me to life there. I don't want to be some mindless zombie !!

  57. Personally, living in a place such as the setting for Anthem would totally and utterly bore me into disgust. The whole stage gives me a visual as im reading of a place that is always cloudy and everyone functions as robots. In respect, they do, they have designated times for work and meals, allotted times for most everything and strict guidelines with which to follow. Their school teachings narrow it down to a bare minimal allowing only those designated as scholars to further their learnings. This place is just undesireable all around.

  58. The reason that the first page of the book begins, “It is a sin to write this.” is because the book says that staying away from humanity is considerd a sin. You can't depend on yourself but depend on you brother in need. You pretty much loose all thoughts of yourself. The abillity to create thoughts and ideas come much harder becasue you have to depend on others.

I think that Equality refers to himself as “we” is because he is taught not to think differnet. So if he was to think different, it would be a sin. Everybody is taught to be as "one". Equality uses we so he won't think he is going to sin.

As on mabe living in the setting in the Anthem, I don't believe that I would enjoy it. The government sounds very disciplined, but the whole society sounds bleak. Everybody is taught to be the same, and that would be very difficult for me to do. Teaching comes down only to the smartest. I would not like to live in this strict society.

@sethkinker- Your choice to live in this setting is a very intersting choice.

@jwats - I like your point about going both ways with Equality.

  59. #3: Equality refers to himself as "we" because it is known as a major sin if he doesn't. It seems to me the World Council is very stric with their laws. Equality through out the chapter worries if he will be cought for his sins. Equality states "Nothing matters save the work, our secret, our evil, our precious work. Still, we must also write, for-may the Council have mercy on us!-we wish to speak for once to no ears but our own." -Ayn Rand, pg.18. This passage tells me that in this time you weren't alound to speak for yourself just for your "brothers."

  60. #4: Personally I would consider being friends with Equality just because he seems to me like a nice person. Equality, to me, is just a confused man who just wants to speak for himself. The reason I say I would consider being friends with Equlity is because I wouldnt understand his world and he wouldnt understand mine. Another reason would be, is that I couldnt stand him talking in 3rd person all the time. All in all I would agree to be friends with him just cause I feel sorry for him, because of his lifestyle.

  61. Honors Prompt: The answer to this is a no brainer for me. Yes I like how they say everyone is alike but also I wouldnt like getting compaired to all the time. The Anthem to me describes a very depressing life style, which I could not stand. Another reason why I wouldnt wanna live in this society is I couldnt stand the sleeping schedule, I want to sleep when ever I want to not by a certain bell. Also I would not put up with the teacher and leaders always putting me down.

@ Mnieb: I agree with your paragraph perfectly, its not confuseing and it gets right to the point.

@ Scrou: I love the way you write, your paragraphs make perfect sense to me and I can see where you got your answers.

  63. 4.Yes,I would want to be friends with someone like Equality-2521. He would be able to keep good secrets, and would go right with me, because like him,I don't always follow the rules. He likes studying different things, which is also what I like to do.

5.He refers to himself as we because he feels that he is no different from his brothers. He thinks that since he was raised the same way, and taught the same way as his brothers, that they are the same.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Honors prompt:The society that he lives in is way different from our society, you are supposed to be equal to your brothers because you live amongst them. There is way too much discipline if you get in trouble, like you can get burned to death. The way they go about life is wierd, they they are in schooling until they are 15 years old, then they go to the home of the selected job and stay there and work and then when they get old they go to the elders home.

  65. @JBower-I like the way that you that you described what living in that place would be like.I liked how you said that living there would bore you to death.

  66. #3/The people under the council have it pounded into their heads at birth to think in the mindset of everyone around them. The council wants them to follow what they say and not think for themselves at all. "We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, one, indivisible, and forever."(Rand-pg.19)They seem to have no thought process to speak for themselves in the least. The underlings only do what they are told.
#4/ Yes, I would want to be friends with Equality. He is the one light in the shadow of dark world filled with hypocrites. I like independent because at least I would have someone to talk to and not a mindless drone like the rest of Equality's "brothers" in Anthem. The more mind they have the better. Mindless individuals are for the Council, not the individuals themselves.

  67. HONORS DISCUSSION PROMPT/
The political structure of the society described in Anthem is fundamentally flawed in that it gives no stimulation to the brains of its subjects therefore causing no forward movement of said society. The technology is prehistoric, the social relationships of the people in the society of Anthem are meaningless, and the quality of life is dull. Education seems to have slowed down or stopped to the point that no one learns anything new at any point in their student-hood or adult life. I would never want to live in this society. There is no sense of freedom of expression. I need that in my life or I crumble like a pebble under an avalanche of boulders.

  68. 3: Equality refers to himself as we because he doesn't know that he is one person because he was not brought up that way.

4: I think I would like to be Equality's friend because he is different and has a unique personality. I wouldn't like to have his brothers as a friend though because the are all the same and seem boring and uninteresting.

Honors: Equality's time is in the future. They don't have electricity and use candles. They are forbidden to talk about the time before the "Great Rebirth". They're education is restricted. I would not want to live in their society because it has expectations and limits that I certainly would not follow.

  69. Personly, I would like to be frieds with Equality. Although he is a bit of a trouble maker, he seems to be one of the few people at the time who has a mind of his own. He looks diffrent from the other students so the teachers say he has a curse, and at the time I am sure that is what it looked like. All men at this time have been taught that they are to act alike, think alike and look alike, so a six foot tall man would not seem normal. In school I would probably talk to him at lunch, but beyond that I would try to seem like just another student. I noticed that the punishment for being diffrent is to be lashed. Equality is a fast learner, and is better at his studdies than his class mates. He loves science and wants to learn all that he can, which is considered evil.
The goal of the goverment is to keep the entire population in darkness and to teach them that every living person does not matter. It is all about the group, the team, the individual no longer has a purpose if they cannot help everyone else. Thus Equality poses a slight threat of being more intelligible than his class mates. He would be a good partner on a science or math project and his insight into the unlimited possibilities of the world would be interessting to listen to.

  70. In the book, Equality refers to himself as "we" mainly because he was never taught the word "I". He is part of a scociety where the individual is no longer desiered. If you are diffrent from your "fellow men" you are deemed cursed or you are disciplened. "I" is another way to identify yourself, or to distinguish yourself. To distinguish yourself from anyother man is to commit a sin. The goverment in this particular book is trying to make the individual die. They force the idea that everyone is either your sister or your brother, that the goverment knows all. If you are diffrent, try to be diffret, or insist on acting up, you are cursed or you are not worthy to live. All of the elderly are placed in a home called The Home of the Useless. Unable to work and toil for their "brothers", the elderly have no use other than to sit on a porch all day and drink lemonadde. The point of destroying the word "I" is to keep every living human in line.

Being told that you could or could not do the job that you as the individual prefered, just because a very old man said so would infuriate many people. Yet that is the scociety that Equality lives in. He is a man who is cursed an is forever doomed in many ways, both with his height and the laws he is ordered to follow.
At the time the book is depicting, the closest thing they have to entertainment is songs about how wonderful it is to toil. Under the assumption only certain people are allowed to sing and preform it must be very dull,on top of that you must listen to the same topic every single night. It takes a whole year for one peice of writing to be written by the scribes they have in this time, and there is no electricity to be found. That would mean no television, cell phones, I phones, not even a telegraph, let alone a pager. The only way to call for help would be to send a horseman, a runner, or a letter. This sounds like an extremly dangerous time if you have a serious accident. The doctors are taught to drain blood from a victim. This is an extremly old method which dates to before the Royals at Buckingham Palace. The goal is to drain all of the poisoned blood from the victim, but that could have any number of consequences. Scince this is so far back in time I have to wonder if they have running water in every home, or if they retained the knowledge to wash their hands before and after a surgery,or if they retained any sanitary measures at all.
At the begining of life the child is taken from its mother and is sent to live in the House of Infants, which has no color in it.There is a bed for every student, but other than that there is not much to talk about. The children live there ubtil they are five years old. None of the children are alowed to have argumets, to fight is to do something that is considered horrible at any age. The punishiment is to be locked in a cellar. After that you are told to go to the House of Students where you learn. If you are smarter than the other students it is horrible, because you are considered to be superior, thus you are evil.Instead of taking a more challenging class, the students are all forced to learn the same thing. After five years in the House of Infants and ten years in the House of Stidents you are then assigned what your job will be. You as the individual have no say in this and you are expected to accept this without hessitation and without any judgement of your own.
Scociety over all is a bleak exsistance. You are no longer the individual, you are worth nothing, you are told what to do and thus you do it. There is no poit of you living if you cannot work for those you live with, and you in a sense live with the entire community. The message that this goverment in the book has sent is clear. Either fall in line, or die.
