1- What is Equality experiencing for the first time in this chapter? What does he feel as a result?

2- Explain why Equality laughs when he remembers that he is “the Damned.”

3- Equality bends to get a drink of water and has a new experience (pg 80). What is the new experience? How does he react?

Honors' Discussion Prompt
What does the Uncharted Forest symbolize in Anthem? Is this a prevelant symbol in today's society? In Ayn Rand's society? Use examples.

  1. #1. I think for the first time in his life he is feeling what it is like to be free, and to be able to control your own life. He had all the time in the world, and he didn’t have to worry about anyone but himself.
#3. Equality laughs whenever he remembers that he’s the dammed because he doesn’t feel dammed. He feels alive for the first time in his life. He doesn’t want to ever go back to the life he had before

    Honors:
I think that the Uncharted Forest represented a new life for the people who were trapped in the city. I think it also represents a since of freedom. The city kind of reminded me of a jail, and the forest is supposed to be like the world today. There really aren’t a lot of things that remind me of the Uncharted Forest in today’s society except for if they would go camping. People in the book are not open to the idea of being free. They like structure and to be told what they can and can’t do.

  2. 2: Equality laughs when he realized he is "the Damned" in the city because e's never felt happier in his life. This is the first time he is able to just take a day to do what he truly wants, and so it's ironic that he's damned for doing so.

3: Equality sees his reflection in the stream for the first time. He realizes that he looks different form his brothers. He studies his reflection and sees that he is attractive. probably because he is so different.I think this helps lead up to when he realizes he's an individual and not a part of society.

Honors: The Uncharted Forest sybolizes a new way of thinking that no one in Equality's society has dared to do. When Equality defies the Council and eneters the forest, he begins to realize he is his own person. He sees how wrong the society he was living in was. I think for our society the Uncharted Forest would represent innovative thinking that people haven't discovered before. For Ayn Rand, the Uncharted Forest represents how against communism she was. It shows that she was an objectivist and thought you should defy any form of commuinism.

  3. #1: I think that Equality is experiencing freedom for the first time in his whole life. He can do whatever he wants to do and he can do it however he wants to.

#2: He laughs whenever he remembers hew is "the damned" because he remembers that he doesn't care about the old rules of his old society.

Honor's Discussion Prompt: The Uncharted Forest in the Anthem symbolizes freedom and discovery because everything in the city was restricted and new discoveries were blocked by rules. I think that there is an Uncharted Forest in today's society but today's society pretty much is the uncharted forest because everyone is allowed to discover new things. In her society no one was really allowed to think freely.

  4. 1.Equality is experiencing freedom for the first time in his entire life.He feels like he can do anything that he wants, because there is nobody there to tell him what he can and cannot do.

2.He laughs when he remembers that he has been now called "the damned" because he doesn't care about what they say, because he doesn;t have to follow the rules of the society anymore.

  5. Honors: The uncharted forest in Anthem represents freedom. It also represents the power to discover new things and think freely without any restrictions.Without the restrications Equality can be what he wants to be, and do what he wants to do.In today's society, we live the way that we would live in the uncharted forest, with freedom to invent and to dicover new things. In Ayn Rand's society, people could not do what they wanted to, but she shows in the book that she was fully against that way of life.

  6. #2 Equality begins to laugh when he remembers he is “The Damned” because he really doesn’t feel this way. For the first time he can do whatever he wants. He’s not on a schedule or routine anymore and Equality’s beyond happy about this. He doesn’t have to follow the many strict and silly rules of the society he just left.
#3 Equality finds a stream and bends down to get a drink of water, while kneeling there he sees a reflection, his reflection. At first I believe he was startled because he has never seen his face before, but after looking at it for a moment longer, Equality was very pleased by his looks. He described his body and face to be beautiful. He also mentions he doesn’t look like anyone he has come face to face with throughout his life. He now has proof before his eyes that he really is an individual.
Prompt: The Uncharted Forest symbolizes freedom and discovery in the Aythem. While in the forest, Equality realizes that he really is his own unique person. He also discovers that the way things were taught in his society was wrong. The council limited many things and didn’t provide enough answers to mental questions many citizens thought about every day. However for our society, the Uncharted Forest symbolizes people who really think “out of the box.” Lastly, the forest represents Ayn Rand’s convictions for objectivism. She also thought of the Uncharted Forest to be reality that Equality has to deal with.

  7. 2. He laughs because it's so ironic. His whole life in the city he was never happy, never felt alive. Well, now he does and he's "damned" for it. It's ironic because he couldn't be happier damned and would never want to return to his old life.

    3. Equality sees his reflection for the first time. He is very pleased because he doesn't look like his brothers, he thinks he is attractive, and he's happy that he can actually see with his own eyes physical proof that he's an individual and different.

Honors: The uncharted forest represents freedom. There, Equality is his own person and can decide things for himself. A forest in todays society reminds you of being free from civilization and for a while just being alone with yourself. Freedom in today's society is everywhere. People all over are fighting for human rights. To other people in Ayn Rand's society, people that aren't Equality, only find fear when they think of the forest, because that is how it was shown to them, as a thing to be feared. They spread tales of people who went in there dying from wild animal attacks and stuff like that.

  8. 1/I believe Equality i feeling freedom for the first time in his life. He can do whatever he wants to whenever he wants to and loves it.

2/Equality laughs when he remembers he is the "Damned" because he is having the most fun he has had in his life.

Honors/The Uncharted Forest represnts freedom. He loves it there because he gets to be his own person with no rules oe laws. In todays society the Uncharted Forest represents free thinking and is prevalent everywhere. People are fighting for peace in every country against unjust reasons. In Ayn Rand's society, however, there is only fear when they think of the Uncharted Forest because that is how people were raised and supposed to think of it.

  9. 2- He laughs as he has now realized to some extent that his homeland was purposely being retarded from advancement. He laughs at their ignorance.

3- He has finally found a reflection of himself. He discovers that he is a strong, fair man that is being held down by society in a literal sense.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Honors- It symbolizes a wild frontier where you can cut your own path. This is a prevalent sign in our society for escape and freedom. In this society, however, it is seen as almost certain death.

    ReplyDelete
  11. He experiences freedom for the first time. He feels happy and pride in himself. He learns truly about what he can do.
He laughs because he realizes that he is not "the Damned" but instead his civilization is since they do not understand.

The forest symbolizes a barrier for the people. A place of doom, gloom and death. This is not prevalent in todays society since barriers are existence however we are told to push past the barriers and fight against them. In Rand's society the forest symbolizes a barrier of peoples will against the council. There will is about the size of that small town, surrounded by a forest i.e. the council men.

  12. 1#: Equality as a result is feeling incontrol of himself for the first time. He doesn't have to worry about following all the crazy rules hes been following since birth. He finally just feels free.

#3: Equality bends down to get a drink and he sees his reflection for the first time. At first hes shocked because all this time hes never seen his own face and body, but now he has. Then, he realized that he was beautiful. He is glad that he doesn't look like his brothers. It made him feel good because he saw that he was a different indiviual.

Honors: The Uncharted Forest represents freedom. It helped Equality realize that everybody is there own person, and he doesn't have to obey anybodys orders. It made him realize that he could rely on himself; that he had is own mind. In our society, forests are a sense of relaxation. You have freedom, and you dont have to worry about things going on while you are in the wilderness. Like outside of the forest is fighting going on; in all pplaces in the world. In Ayn Rand's society people think of fear in presents of a forest because that's what they were taught.

#1- Equality is feeling freed from his chains. He feels that he controls his own life now and doesn't have to be with the "we" anymore.

#3- He experences the look of his own face and body. He sees that he was different and notices how he stands out from his "brothers". He feels complete joy from seeing this and knowing that he was different the whole time. He knows he's beautiful.

Honors- The uncharted forest symbolizes a place that is distant and forbidden, but free and welcoming at the same time. It shows that if you go in you rarly come out but to go in makes you free. Theres only one place in todays society i know of that is exactly like the uncharted forest, the amazon rainforest and area 51. These places are forbidden to most or just not easy to get to and are like the uncharted forest in the since that well...you could die there.

ekapl- I agree totally when you say equality just finally feels free.
bbick- I agree when you say he laughs at the ironicness of the situation.

  15. 2.) He laughs because he is 'The Damned" but in reality he is free and the rest of the brothers are truly damned. He acts in joy and swings from trees and constantly laughs.

3.) He sees his reflection. He grows lots of joy because he knows who he truly is now.

    Honors Prompt:
It symbolizes a new beginning for all the people like Equality. They can start there own life where they are truly themselves

  16. #2 Equality begins to laugh when he remembers he is “The Damned” because he knows that he can act as an individual. He feels that he is free and can explore whatever he wants to do.

#3 Equality sees his reflection in the water and knows what his physical apperance looks like. He knows that he looks differnet from his brothers and that he is free to be himself.

Honors- The Uncharted Forest is a place that is kept secret and is a forbidden area. When you enter you are free, but you rarly exit the forest because it welcomes you into its territory. Area 51 is a good example of a forbidden area in todays society.

  17. 1. Equality experiences freedom for the first time in his life. While he was in his old society, he was basically banned from doing anything that he wanted. So, now that he is in this forest, he recognizes that nobody would dare mess with him. He is now able to do as he pleases and as i said, free. Then, Golden One shows up and he knows that he is in the perfect place.

    3. For the first time in his entire life, Equality sees his face. They did not have mirrors, so this stream was the only thing that could possibly give him the chance. He says that he is beautiful. He thinks that he is different than all his brothers, like the fact that his limbs were straight and stronger than any other.

Honors Prompt: In the Anthem, The Uncharted Forest is basically the most frightening and questionable location you could ever experience. Altough, this is just what people think. Once Equality reaches the forest he notices that it is not even close to frightening, it is an amazing venue. Then, unexpected, the Golden One shows up and it makes everything so much better for him. This is not prevalent to our society today, because there is no place that has not been ventured and we are not afraid of anything. Our world today is unique with many places to visit.

    ReplyDelete
  18. #2 He laughs because he realizes that he was acting like an individual. He was finally free from the Counsels grip.
#3 He has seen his face for the first time in his life. He is awed.
Prompt: I think that it represents the unexplored area of the mind. This is in today's society because we are all focused on one thing so we don't use all of our brain. This definitely is in Ayn Rand's society. Everyone (but Equality) only uses the part of their brain that is required.

  20. 1) For the first time equality is experiencing freedom and happiness. He is realizing that he doesn’t have to do anything that he doesn’t want to do. He is free to make his own decisions and go out and do what he pleases. He is happy and he feels like someone new.

    3) When equality bends over to get a drink of water he sees himself for the first time. He is shocked; he quickly realized his face was not like his brothers. He found himself unique and beautiful.

Honors: The Uncharted Forest is the unknown; it’s something that can't be controlled. It's feared by most and not loved at all. Once equality experiences the forest he only realizes that it helps him find out who he really is as a person. It makes him feel free and happy. The uncharted forest in today’s society would have to be Mount Everest maybe? Only because few conquer that mountain and once you come back you’re a changed person. Most people fear Mount Everest and in the book most people fear the forest.

  21. #1 Equality experiences freedom for the first time in his life. He feels happy and also experiences uncontrollable laughter.

#3 Equality sees himself for the first time. He is very pleased because he unlike his brothers because he is more attractive.

Honors: The Uncharted Forest represents a sanctuary in Equality's society. It is the only place where they can be individuals. In Ayn Rand's life, it represents the freedom of persecution and communism. In today's world, I still take the forest at face value. It is nature, which has been for many years, relaxing to mankind. It has always been a place of refuge for people.

    ReplyDelete
  22. #2: Equality laughs when remembers he's "damned" because he actually feels the opposite. He feels free and is laughing at his society's ignorance.

#3: He sees his reflection in the water. He is shocked an awed. He realizes that he is also physically different from his brothers. He is "unique and beautiful.”

Honors: The forest represents freedom from oppression. It also represents a new way of life for Equality. In today's society the U.S. is actually like the forest. It represents freedom for the immigrants and a new way fro them to live.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 2). Equality laughs when he remembers he is "the Damned" because he realizes he doesnt care what his old society thinks of him. It's funny to him because of how good he feels even if he is damned.

3). When Equality goes to get a drink he discovers his reflection. Seeing himself for the first time is a huge deal. Plus, he's very pleased because he finds himself more attractive than his brothers.

Honors:The Uncharted Forest symbolizes freedom to Equality. When he is there, he is free from the burden of the society he was living in. A forest in our society today could be the same thing or land out in the contry that is free from th burden of the busy cities. For Ayn Rand, the forest is an escape from evil.

    ReplyDelete
  24. 1- Equality is experiencing Freedom. He could whatever he wanted without worrying that he would get scolded. He could jump, skip, and roll around. Basically, he could be himself.

3- Equality finds a mirror in the water. He realizes that he is stronger and better looking than his ‘brothers’. He thinks highly of himself. He also says that he can trust this being and believe in it.

Honors- the Uncharted Forrest represents a sense of freedom. I guess this could be related to America for immigrants. It definitely represents America for Ayn Rand. She experienced many amazing opportunities when she moved to America

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1) I think Equality is experiencing freedom for the first time. As a result he feels happy because for the firdt time he can be his own peoson and not worry about getting caught.

    3) Equality bends down to a stream and sees his reflection for the first time ever. He is amazed and dumfounded at how much more handsome he is compared to his "brothers."

Honors- The "Uncharted Forest" symbolizes freedom to me. I see the city as a prison, and the people are stuck there for life. The forest to me is like counseling to prisoners. In todays world the forest reminds me of a spa, where you get to forget the world and relax. Ayn Rand's society the forest is seen as an death trap for people who think they can excape the world.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ekapl- I agree with your prompt.

Bbick- I think your is very descriptive

    ReplyDelete
  27. 2) Equality laughs when he remembers he is "damned" because he realizes how stupid his society was. He looks back and laughs at how things were. Honestly, he could care less what the council has to say about him. He's over it, it's all behind him now and he actually finds it ammusing that he is "damned". He's carefree and has found something that actually made him happy.

3)Equality has seen his own reflection. Never was he allowed to see himself because he would know he was different from his 'brothers'. Equality is actually a lot different than his brothers and just now realized it. He's not the same and he knows it, he is his own person.

Honors: I think that the "Uncharted Forest" symbolizes freedom, discovery, and a new life. Although it comes across as a scary place, it's somewhere where Equality can be himself. Once you enter, you're free, no one will chase after you. When Equality realizes he is truely different from his brothers, it leads to discovery. I bet that throughout this forest, there are many things the council have never seen or heard of before. All this discovery could lead to a new beginning, a new life perhaps. It's peaceful, no one can bother you. Be yourself, your free from that crazy society. Actually for Equality, this forest may seem like a dream come true because he's wanted a place where he could go chill and make new discoveries without being caught. In Ayn Rands society, the forest is feared, it goes against everything they were taught. It's meant to come across as something scary, but the truth behind it all is that it's a place like no other that could change you forever.

  28. 1. In this chapter Equality discovers his own reflection for the very first time. He finally gets to see himself as an individual, and he begins to admire his face and body.
    2. He laughs because he really isn't the damned, the others are. He no longer has to have someone tell him what to do. He is his own individual.

    ReplyDelete
  29. #1 Equality experienced freedom because he was alone in the forest, he could do anything without getting caught. No one could could control him or tell him to stop running, leaping, or falling. He was in control for once.

#3 Equality finds a stream and bends down to get a drink of water, while kneeling there he sees his reflection for the first time. Equality realizes he is different than his brothers in the society, he is his own person.

Honors: The Uncharted Forest symbolizes freedom in today's society I think. Its a place to get away and to do what you will. You can do whatever and whenever you want. No one or nothing can hold you and back and you can be yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Equality is experiencing the freedom of being an individual. He is finding out what it is like to do as you please. This gives him a feeling of happiness because he can do anything he wants. He can run, jump, climb, fall, or whatever he pleases because he is making his own choices. I think that part of the reason this makes him so happy is because he has always had to do what someone else told him, and now he has to answer to no one but himself.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Equality laughs because he is finding out that they are the damned, and he is the blessed. He has been blessed with curiosity, knowlege, and the ability to think for himself. He can stand apart from the crowd. He has found out that there is pride in being who you want to be and there is the ability to take pride in everything that you do, reguardless of what you are doing.

  32. The ucharted forest symbolizes the great unknown. It is everything that humans are yet to discover, and everything that is waiting to be discovered. I think that this symbol is somewhat a part of todays society. I think that the main difference between what it stands for in Anthem and what it stands for in reality though is the fact that reality doesn't prohibit you from exploring the great unknown. Innovation and creation are actually encouraged. Also, it is considered amazing to discover something that eases the toil of men.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1) Equality feels freedom. He experiences freedom all at once and feels really good about it. Now that Equality feels free he will finally be able to completely free his mind from society and learn what he wants to know.

    2) Equality finds it funny that he is "The Damned." Equality is very happy and free from society. He believes that society is really "The Damned" from their ignorance.

Honors) The Uncharted Forest symbolizes freedom. Equality is free from worry and from the ridiculous laws his society must follow. The Uncharted Forest could resemble many things in today's society. It could resemble the real world after someone has finished school. It could show how Equality was on his own.

  35. HONORS PROMPT/ The Uncharted Forest represents the unknown and forbidden. Yes; many people think it to be okay to fear the unknown today (I think you should tackle it head on). It is prevalent in Rand's society in a sense that whatever is unknown is forbidden. The Unspeakable Word is unknown and forbidden, the Unmentionable Times are unknown and forbidden, and personal thought is unknown and forbidden.
#2/ I think he laughs just for the hell of it. He is realizing how wrong his society was and how stupid it was of them to call him the damned or for them to damn someone like him.
#3/ He witnesses his own reflection. I think he feels proud and a bit vain. Equality likes how he looks. He realizes that he looks so much more happier than his former "brothers".

  36. Equality laughs when he remembers he is “the Damned” because, he is the only true free soul there is at this point. He has discovered pride, by killing his own meal; he has discovered his reflection in a pool of water, and he believes he can trust the man that he sees; he has traveled away from a prison called a city, and has found freedom in the unknown. He is finally free from the city and is blessed by the freedom. He believes in himself, and no matter what, no one can take that away from him. Not even the city its self can take this away. Equality grew up in a world where the city could take anything away.

    ReplyDelete
  37. For the first time Equality is experiencing pride, self worthiness, and freedom. When Equality kills a bird and then cooks it himself, he experiences pride by being able to do something by himself. When he looks into the reflective pool, he realizes that he can trust himself. He says,” And we thought that we could trust this being who looked upon us from the stream, and that we had nothing to fear of this being,” on page 80. Equality has taken control of his life, which is more than the population could say. He is his own man, and he is proud of that.

    ReplyDelete
  38. In Anthem, the uncharted forest symbolizes many things. The first thing it symbolizes is self choice. It is extremely easy to do what everyone else is doing. Taking a step away from the crowd is not easy. Aiming for something bigger, something better in your mind, is difficult. The Uncharted Forest is just that, uncharted. The people of the area that Equality lives in do not like difference. You are evil if you are different. There is no going back any time any way, if you are seen as different, special, or out of place you are evil. It almost reminds me of the times when people tortured “witches”. If any woman was thought to be “odd” or “strange” or “different”, they burned them at the stake. The Saint of Pyre was burned at the stake for saying the forbidden word, just like a witch. The forest also represents fear. There is an old saying,” What you don’t know you fear, what you fear you kill,” This case is true throughout human history.
The government in this story needs the population to be afraid of something though, so they let the forest stay. The population cannot destroy the forest, because the government says so. In order to keep power over the population, they must inflict fear on them.
Today the same thing happens within our own minds. Within us, there is a voice that says, “Blend in”. That voice is of the person within us that wants to be normal. Everyone, every single human being on this planet, wants to be accepted. No one wants to be the kid at lunch that has no friends. It is one thing to want to be alone; it is another to be isolated. There is an Uncharted Forest here in the world; it is the Uncharted Forest within us. It is the scariest place, and yet the only place we can be free. It is our true selves. So what if one kid is different and accepts him or herself for whom they really are inside. It should not be our place to judge a decision that we did not make. If every person was not who they thought they should be, but who they truly were inside, it would be a better world. If every single person was the same, we would live in Equality’s world. It would be a world where all differences are evil, where a human cannot think. Where humans are not humans, just objects the equivalent to machines. It would be the place where Equality started, the place he was born into. The place that so many of us know is wrong. It is wrong because it takes away our humanity.

  39. Equality felt damned and laughed about the fact because he knew what he was doing for the first time. Back when he was sweeping streets, all he knew that he was doing what the council or his instructor was saying. Now he can live the life he wants and he can do whatever. He is free. This is what it means by feeling damned and laughing about it.
