Anthem: Chapter 4

Respond to the question below.

What is the name that Liberty has given to Equality? Does this name fit? Why?

Honors's Discussion Prompt
In this chapter, the interaction between Liberty and Equality is one demonstration of the author’s use of foreshadowing in the novel. Based on this interaction, what might the reader expect in the future action?

  1. The Golden One. I think for looks the name might fit considering her hair is golden. He says that in Chp. 2.

Based on the interaction, you can expect The Golden One and Equality to get together. They will most likely defy the laws and find a way to do it.

  2. #1: He calls her "The Golden One." I think this name fits her because she is one of the only girls he knows and really the first one he has interacted with, other than the ones he "interacted" with in the mating hall. One of the reasons he might have called her this is because she has golden hair.

  3. Honors Discussion Prompt: Based on the interaction between Liberty and Equality I think they are going to see each other more often and talk to each other, but in the end I think they are going to be caught and separated forever and they will never see each other again. Another prediction I have is they get together and run off together into the Forbidden Forest and live and thrive there doing whatever they want and however they want.

  4. Equality calls her the golden one. When calling her that he is talking about how her yellow/ golden hair shines in the sunlight. It's the thing he remembers her most by when he thinks of her that’s probably the first thing that comes to mind is her unique color of hair. As for the name she gives him which is the Unconquered only because she known’s of the rules of which he is supposed to follow and chooses to break them. He is unlike the other men he is his own person and does what he wants both of their names fit perfectly for their personality.

  5. Equality and liberty met on the edge of where their two worlds meet. Each time they see each other they interact more and more. She always seems to cross equality's mind more each time he sees her. Based on their growing relationship you can only guess that they are going to end up together. His name is the unconquered only because she knows he does not care to break the rules. They will end up together, but only time will tell.

  6. Liberty gave Equality the name 'The Unconquered'. I think the name fits perfectly. Equality isn't a meek slave to society like the rest of his brothers. He dares to have his own opinions and thoughts and he isn't afraid to act on them. His will and mind haven't been conquered by the chains he grew up in, he is still unbroken.

  7. Equality and Liberty are already breaking little rules to see each other. I think they really care for each other. They both see the other as an individual and they aren't brainwashed like the rest of the society. I think they will end up together one way or another. I think that interaction foreshadows a future for them.

  8. I think the name that Liberty gave to Equality, The Unconquered one fits him. It means he is the only one that isn't contolled by the society. He goes by his own rules, and ways of life. He is his own person and doesn't act like someone that he's not. That's why that name fits him perfectly.
Honors Prompt: I think the reader might except in the near future some secret place for them to run off to. I think they will come up with a plan and run away together; never looking back on their pasts. They are already breaking laws just to see each other. There love for each other is too strong. They are doing something that's never been done before. I'm excited to see whats going to happen next.

  10. Honors/ In the future, you can expect a loving relationship forming between Liberty and Equality. I see them ending up together one way or another. Unless some terrible tradgedy occurs, interaction foreshadows the future for the them.

  11. Liberty has given Equality the name The Unconquered. I think this name fit Equality to a T. The communist society surrounding Equality has conquered all of his brothers, making them think and do as they are told. However, Equality hasn't let them gain control of him. He's always been different and will continue to grow and think more freely as the book goes on.

Honors: I think this indicates that Equality and Liberty will end up together. They both think a lot more freely than the other brothers and sisters. They'll find a way to break the rules without the Council finding out. They may even help start a rebellion or uprising of some sort when they realize they are all entitled to self expression. I have no idea if that'll actually happen, but I'm really hoping it does.

  12. Liberty calls Equality the Unconquered. I think this name really fits. Equality isn't a follower like his brothers. He thinks and acts in a way that is unique to him which breaks all the ruls of his society. He isn't afraid of the Council and what they can do to him.

Honors: Equality and Liberty break the rules every time they see each other and every time the see each other they communicate more openly. They actually care very deeply about each other and this illegal. I think there are two ways their relationship may go. The Council can find out about them and punish them for their crimes or they get to be together forever. I really hope it’s the second one.

  13. Liberty gave Equality the name "The Unconquered". This is perfect for him because he is not just another slave to this community. He is different and breaks the rules on a daily basis. I could see Equality breaking the routine of this community which would make his name perfect. This probably makes him more attractive to Liberty as well.

Honors:As I get further into this novel I hope to see Liberty and Equality together. It would be amazing to have them break the rules and maybe even destroy this whole communistic system. I don't even know how they could attempt to do this, but I could see it happening. The leaders of this community are so strict it seems impossible, but nothing is impossible!

  14. #1 Liberty gives Equality the name, "The Unconquered". The name means that he can not be tamed. This name does fit him. The reason being is that he is not going to let the Council put him down. He will not succumb to their will if it mean getting rid of everything that he's worked for.
Prompt: The interaction foreshadows that Liberty and Equality will have a future together. I think that they might run away from the City like in "The Giver". It also tell that the Council will try and conquer Equality. I believe that the Council will try to get information out of him. This will lead to Liberty and Equality running away.

  15. Liberty gave Equality the name "The Unconquered", which fits him perfectly. Equality has not been defeated by the society. He refuses to be a victim of conformity. Equality continues to defy the laws.

Prompt: I believe that this means they will form a relationship. In a society without real emotions, such as love, this is taboo. They will fight together until the end. Whatever this means, they will try anything to fix their world. It would even mean overlooking death.

  16. The Unconquered is the name Liberty gave to Equality; I think this name fits him very well. This name means he hasn’t been conquered by the society; he isn’t controlled like the rest of his brothers. Equality follows the rules he is supposed to, but also has his own set of reasonable rules. He isn’t scared to have his own opinion.

  17. Prompt: Reading the interaction between Equality and Liberty, I do believe that they will become more attached to one other. Therefore they will want to speak and see each other more often. Both of these characters are brave and like to discover the unknown. They both find it interesting learning about each other. Even though they are breaking some rules, I believe they are smart enough to keep some distance between them so their little conversations are kept secret.

  18. Equality has been given the name 'The Unconquered'. I think that this name fits because Equality has broken many of his society's laws by the time we get to this part of the story. He has been going down to his tunnel for quite some time now, and he has started messing around with debris from the unmentionable times. Now we see him trying to build a relationship with a woman, something that is forbidden in this society. This name also indicates that he is somewhat rebelious.

  19. Based on what we've seen so far in the interactions between Liberty and Equality, I think that the author is forshadowing a relationship between these two. The fact that Liberty can't seem to take her eyes off of Equality supports this. I also think that the way Rand describes the interactions between these two supports the idea of a deeper relationship.

  20. zbooth13: I think also he has a strong mind. Most people would go with the flow, follow each other but he broke away.

jwats: I agree, after reading the giver, they have many similarities. One person stands out of the crowd, against the rest, runs off and tries to do things differently.

  21. Regular:
"The Unconquered" is the name that Liberty has given Equality. This name fits Equality more than anyone in this story. Equality doesn't ever want to give up, or be "conquered." The name "The Unconquered" shows Equality's determination.

    Honors:
In the future I believe that Equality and Liberty will become extremely close. Equality will probably share his thoughts, feelings, and wisdom with Liberty. I think that they will try to overthrow their society and make it where everyone is free to express their feelings, and learn all that there is to know.

Liberty gave Equality the name 'The Unconquered', it fits him quite well because he breaks a lot fo rules. She calls him this because she knows he is unlike any man she has ever met before and has broken many rules just to interact with her. It makes Equality seem even more indepentdent and a free thinker.

    -Honors Prompt-
I think Equality and Liberty will grow quite close. It might even come to Liberty making the decition to stay with him no matter what. You can already tell Equality has fallen for Liberty, so she most likely will show up later in the story. It's interesting how even though everyone else is the same how is it Liberty can think freely as well? It brings the question of "how controled were these people really?" and many more question on the society and what made the people think the way they did.

zbooth13- I agree when you say it looks like forshadowing when Liberty can't take her eyes off Equality. It shows how much they want to know about eachother.

emilyfaulks- I agree when you say Equality makes his own reasonable set of rules for himself. Like how he made sure to use his knowledge to help others not himself.

  24. Liberty gave Equality a very unique name. The name she chose was The Unconquerable. It fits well because Equality does not follow any rules. He also has a strong mind and has not fallen for the brainwash technique the teachers were using. I believe Equality will become a great scholar like he wants to.

Honors’ Prompt: Equality and Liberty obviously have a strong connection. They even gave each other special names. By showing Equality “kissing” Liberty’s hand, the author is saying they will stay together. I think they will create marriage and dating and make the society more modern. Only fate will show them the way.

  26. The name that Equality gave Liberty is The Golden One. I think that the name does fit because the way he described her hair. He described her hair as being as golden as the sun.

Honors: I think that Liberty and Equality interaction is cute for that period of time. I think that they will be seeing much more of each other and they will end up talking a lot more. I think that the reader should expect them to end up being together forever. They will probably run off together since their love is forbidden.

  27. Liberty has given him the name "The Unconqured". It fits him perfectly because he defies all the ways of their laws. Making him like untamed in perspective to the rest of the obidient society

    Honors Prompt:
The reader can expect more and deeper contact between the two.Perhaps closer relationships and longer periods of time together

  28. Liberty has gave Equality the name "The Golden One". I believe that this name describes Liberty and her appearance. She stated that her hair was as golden as the sun.

I believe that Equality and Liberty will have more discussions in the future and a closer relationship.

  29. Equality has been given the name "The Unconqured". I think that this name fits him perfectly. He doesn't like to play by the rules, and doesn't plan to. He hasn't been conquered by society. This name shows his strength and individuality. He plays by his own rules, and not afraid to break the ones society has created. He's not brainwashed into thinking he and his brothers are a whole, but that he is his own person. He is his own person.

Honors Prompt: Liberty and Equality are definitely going to be seen together later on in the story. They are both breaking the rules given just by seeing each other. I don't think these rules are going to affect their relationship. They haven't let society and their strange ways get to them now so, I doubt they will later. I think there will be a deeper connection between the two and they could possibly spend more time together. Although love is forbidden, that won't stop them. But then again, maybe society has a point in why love is forbidden and you shouldn't become emotionally attached to someone...

  30. Liberty has given Equilty the name "The Unconquered." She has given him this name because they he is not like the other brothers. I think this name fits him perfect, he is afraid to brake rules but he is also brave.

  31. Honors prompt:Personally i think in the chapters to come there will be more interaction between Liberty and Equilty. These interactions are going to get more and more intense, which makes it more dangerous to be around one another. With the interaction heating up i think they will either get caught or run away together.

@ Lwood: I agree with your resposes, they make alot sense.

  33. Liberty calls Equality "The Unconquered". He uses his own mind, and takes dangerous risks. He does not let the government control him. He believes that he has the mind to create things, and this scares him. Yet he does not let anyone take it away from him.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Honors: I predict that Liberty and Equality will talk more and more throughout the book. They will fall in love with each other but in the end i think someone will catch them and tell the council and government. they will be separated and forbidden to see or speak to each other.

  35. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered." She calls him this because he thinks for himself or as an individual. He likes to create things in his mind but is frightened by them. he does not take orders form other and doesn't let others stop him.

  36. The name that Liberty gives Equality is "The Unconquered." This fits Equality very well. In my opinion, this states that Equality is not conqured, or controlled, like all the other people in this society. Therefore, she gives him this name knowing that he is different than others. I like how she went with the most unique name which nobody will find out about.

Honors Prompt: I expect that Liberty and Equality will become closer and closer as the book goes on. He treats her so nice, and when he remembers that the season of mating is coming u, he is afraid that she might be forced to go to the City Palace of Mating. he is devistated to think that he might have to be with her. This shows that he truely cares about her, even if he is not abiding by the rules. They will grow strong and become happier, and we should see them together more often in the future.

    1. I do not think that Equality is horrified at being forced to mate with her. I think that he whishes to protect her from being with someone else.

  39. @sethkinker-I like how you described everything in great detail and chose where they would be forced to go if they got caught.

@bbick-I like how you summarized what the name that Equality was given meant.

  40. 1- He called her the Golden One. I think that title is fitting because of the enlightenment part of her future. It also fits due to the fact that she was described with blond hair.

Honors: One would expect that they would develop a relationship. This relationship would then be threatened by the society a large.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Liberty gives Equality the name "The Unconquered". The name fits very well with his personality. Equality does not let anyone put him down without a fight. He thinks for himself. Which is unlike the rest of his "brothers".
HONORS PROMPT/The reader might expect something momentously important to happen next in the story.

    1. What kind of important thing do you think will happen? You made a point of saying he is "The Unconquered", but how does that relate to being important?

  42. Honors propt: I think that the reader might infer that Liberty and Equality do not act like their other brothers. They seem to have a more special relationship unlike any others in their society. They know that there is something between the two of them that no one else shares. I think in their future they grow even closer.

  43. In chapter four Equality tells Liberty that he thinks of her as the Golden One, and in return she tells him that she thinks of him as The Unconquered. The names fit perfectly, Equality secretly makes electricity in an abandonded hole. liberty has golden hair, and in this age of darknes and stupidity/unwillingness to act, she stands out and openly tells him that she to disagrees with the laws.

  44. In this chapter Liberty and Equality all but say to eachother that they love eachother. She gives him a drink, but scince she does not have a cup she uses her hands. Equality ends up kissing her hands. I suspect that later in the book they will either end up secretly loving eachother and spending their lives apart, or they will run away together. In this overprotective landscape though, where would they run to?
